Why did you make this song?
There was just this one time where I wanted my homies to get together and create something cool, whether it be a beat or a full song. Nothing specific, just getting them in one room and jam out. One of the two producers, Manocchs, who curated most of the sound, was playing this riff during a session and I started writing to it. I ended up getting stuck after writing two different songs over it and started looking for some inspiration. Instagram photos, people’s stories, or even Tumblr posts normally spark some ideas in my head so I went to that and ended up talking to my friend Bohno, on Instagram and had him come over within the hour. We worked with what I had so far and just started spewing some melodies out and came up with the recurring “Stay With Me” anthem that you hear throughout the song. Most of the writing was polished by all three of us and Deroia. The best part about the song is how it brought all of these talented artists in the mix. Which is what I wanted in the first place.
What do you want to achieve in your music career?
For now, I want for people to listen to a record of mine and take them to another place. Whether it be to a different time, an actual location, or a memory. I want them to feel however they felt at that time period/place etc. and know that it’s okay for them to feel every single bit of it because thats how I feel when I listen to music. That’s one of the many reasons why I love music and the fact that I have the privilege of possibly making people feel the same way and enjoy music the way I do makes me really stoked.
When did you start loving music and what are you creating next?
Growing up in the Philippines, the first thing that I would hear in the mornings was music. I was mostly raised in a big family by aunts and uncles and my cousins and all of them. I’m an only child so having a big family that surrounded themselves with music definitely played a big role on my influences. From Bon Jovi, Bee Gees, ABBA, and even Celine Dion. Karaoke was a big thing whenever we’d have family or social gatherings which is how I got into singing. But it wasn’t until I moved to California with my mom when I started listening to music that I resonated with. I would say that the last three or two years of my high school career really shaped the style of the music that I want to put out. Artists like Angus & Julia Stone, The Lumineers, Bon Iver, Hozier, Halsey, and many more led me to more of an underground culture in the music scene at that time.
Right now I’m really focused on how I can better my writing and utilizing my vocals more than I normally do. So definitely a lot of depth in the upcoming songs, potential hidden messages in the verses, and sounds that will take you places.
