The Best of Indie Rock: “All We Ever Knew”

The Band The Head and the Heart Reveals the Untapped Musical Potential of Indie Rock

Indie rock song “All We Ever Knew” is the latest release from the band The Head and the Heart, an indie musical group from Seattle, Washington. The story of their beginnings and eventual debut reveal how much work they put into their music, especially “All We Ever Knew”.

The Head and the Heart met and formed through a series of open mic nights at Seattle’s Conor Byrne pub. Vocalist, guitarist, and percussionists Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell met pianist Kenny Hensley and violinist, banjoist, and vocalist Charity Rose Thielen. Drummer Tyler Williams had been in a different band in Richmond, but he moved to Seattle to join The Head and the Heart after hearing a demo Jonathan Russell sent to him. Bassist Chris Zasche was bartending at the Conor Byrne and playing in Seattle bands, and he was the last member to join the original lineup. That’s a lot of people who play a lot of instruments, but it just goes to show how each member of a band is important to the indie rock genre!

After a frenzy of interest from record labels and managers started to swarm around The Head and the Heart, they signed with Sub Pop in November 2010. Sub Pop remastered and rereleased The Head and the Heart’s self-titled album, which peaked on the Billboard 200 Album Charts at #110. In 2010 and 2011, the band toured the United States and Europe extensively, opening for bands such as Vampire Weekend, Dave Matthews, and Death Cab for Cutie as well as headlining their own shows.

The Head and the Heart’s second album Let’s Be Still was released on October 15th, 2013. On November 2nd, the album reached #10 on the Billboard 200 Album Charts. Frontman Josiah Johnson described it as the first album where every member’s influence was equally present and prevalent. James Christopher Monger of praised the record for combining roots and folk to create genuine indie rock songs that embrace both the head and the heart.

“All We Ever Knew” is the first single from The Head and the Heart’s third album Signs of Light to be released on September 9th, 2016 through Warner Bros. Records. The single was released on June 3rd. The song contains multiple instruments, not just the traditional guitar, bass, and drums, but also the violin and the banjo. “All We Ever Knew” is the perfect example of how indie rock pulls from different genres, such as roots and folk, to create a catchy song with a great singalong chorus.
