After two years of anticipation, American rock band DOROTHY released their debut studio album ROCKISDEAD on June 24th, 2016 through Roc Nation. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band released their self-titled EP in October 2014, and people have been riding the hype train for them ever since. In December 2014, Rolling Stone ranked them #14 on their 50 Best New Artists of 2014 list, designating them as “a you need to know”.

After listening to ROCKISDEAD, I definitely agree with Rolling Stone: DOROTHY are a band you need to know. If anything else, you should pay close attention to the title of this album. For more cynical fans of rock, it definitely rings true. Rock music reached its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, splitting off into new wave and post-punk in the 1980s and alternative rock in the 1990s. By the 2000s, rock music had mostly fallen by the wayside (with the exception of a few bands such as The White Stripes), and electronically influenced pop music began to dominate the airwaves.

Given the steady descent of rock music’s mainstream popularity, you would expect DOROTHY to demonstrate what true rock is in a determined and even somewhat rebellious fashion. Indeed, DOROTHY deliver this forceful sentiment in ROCKISDEAD, a solid collection of hard rock tunes best blasted through your car’s loudspeakers as you drive down the highway. It features rugged guitar riffs, robust basslines, and pounding drumbeats galore. These instrumental styles harken back to the sound of the rock music that ruled the radio in the 1970s. To top it all off, lead vocalist Dorothy Martin belts fiercely and passionately in a style that cements her role as a model for powerful female vocalists in rock music. Her vocals have been compared to those of Patti Smith and Joan Jett, known in musical history as the “punk poet laureate” and the Queen of Rock N’ Roll, respectively.

There are many rocking highlights sprinkled throughout ROCKISDEAD. “Dark Nights” demonstrates DOROTHY’s affinity for hard-hitting, bluesy beats. “Gun In My Hand” is a slower tune featuring somber vocals and a rock country-esque tone. “Whiskey Fever” contains possibly the catchiest chorus on ROCKISDEAD, backed by a sinewy guitar riff. Throughout this record, DOROTHY show incredible nuance when it comes to the subgenres of rock, but they always stay rooted in the bluesy timbres from which rock music originated.

Overall, ROCKISDEAD is a solid debut album from a band that shows great promise. Listen to the sixth and most recently released single “Dark Nights” on YouTube below. You can ROCKISDEAD (and DOROTHY’s self-titled EP) streaming on Spotify.
