Jeff Tweedy, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, Big Star’s Jody Stephens Feature in New Concert Film

Because the death of frontman Huge Star frontman Alex Chilton in 2010, Jody Stephens and a group of collaborators—the dB’s Chris Stamey, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, and Let us Energetic leader Mitch Easter—have staged tribute concert events, executing Huge Star’s 1978 album 3rd (released after the band’s breakup and later on reissued as Sister Fans). Very last April, they collected for a clearly show in Los Angeles, alongside Jeff Tweedy, Robyn Hitchcock, Semisonic’s Dan Wilson, Brett Harris, Django Haskins, Skylar Gudasz, and more. A whole chamber orchestra together with San Franciso’s Kronos Quartet joined them for the general performance, conducted by Carl Marsh, who wrote the authentic string arrangements for the album. That clearly show was recorded for a prepared movie and CD launch. Now, options for the film’s launch have been disclosed.

Thank You, Mates: Huge Star‘s 3rd Dwell … And More will premiere at this year’s SXSW movie festival in Austin on March 16, followed by a Q&A with Benno Nelson, Jody Stephens, Mike Mills, Chris Stamey, Ken Stringfellow, and Skylar Gudasz. It will be released on CD/DVD on April 21. Discover a trailer under. All of the recordings from Third had been presented a definitive re-launch as Complete 3rd last year.
