rog the RACKET – My Phone’s My Only Friend Artist Spotlight Vol. 158 #Rogtheracket

Why did you make this song?

Everyone loves to talk about the bad side of the internet and cellphones. But still, we’re all just as addicted as we were yesterday. I have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes I think it progresses with side effects that we’ll grow out of. Sometimes I think we’re killing a part of ourselves. The lyrics of this song illustrate a person that is trying to make connections in real life, and is failing, so he falls more and more into his digital “happy place”, where everything seems easier than real life.

What do you want to achieve in your music career?

I’m trying to make bops that make you think. I don’t want to be preachy, I’m just trying to explore interesting topics in my songwriting, while still making catchy and fun tunes. TV shows like Rick and Morty and Southpark have a way of being dumb and light-hearted while still exploring insanely deep and complicated topics. That’s what I’m trying to do in a lot of my music. Not all of it. Sometimes I just want to be weird or make something fun. But I always try to do it in a smart way.

When did you start loving music and what are you creating next?

There wasn’t a time that I didn’t love music! I’ve been songwriting since I was 10 I think. Right now, I’m working on fun party songs that explore different social issues in ironic ways.
