Norwegian musician Magnus August Høiberg, best known as Cashmere Cat, has released the first single from his debut studio album Wild Love. This single is also titled “Wild Love”. It features Ethiopian Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd and American musical project Francis and the Lights.
In 2012, Cashmere Cat appeared on the international electronic dance music scene with remixes and edits of tracks by Lana Del Rey, 2 Chainz, and Jeremih. In October of that same year, he released his debut Extended Play (EP), titled Mirror Maru, through Belgian record label Pelican Fly. Cashmere Cat’s progressive musical perspective on R&B, hip hop, and bass-driven music gained support from significant figures in the electronic music scene, such as Scottish DJs Hudson Mohawke and Rustie and British DJ Gilles Peterson.
In February 2014, Cashmere Cat released his second EP, titled Wedding Bells, through Scotland-based record label LuckyMe. His career has really picked up since then. In 2014, he was credited as a featured artist and producer on Ariana Grande’s second studio album My Everything. He also opened for her on her 2015 world tour, The Honeymoon Tour. On the tour, he performed a single titled “Adore” which features vocals from Grande.
Cashmere Cat is not just a DJ, but also a producer. Kanye West’s 2016 studio album The Life of Pablo features a track titled “Wolves” that Cashmere Cat produced. He also produced the track “Just Luv Me” on Britney Spears’ 2016 studio album Glory.
Cashmere Cat confirmed his debut studio album last February, but the name and release date have yet to be announced. Thus, “Wild Love” is the first sample we have of this record. Luckily for us, “Wild Love” is a great track. Most significantly, the production sounds absolutely fantastic. You can tell that Cashmere Cat is immensely passionate about electronic music, as it’s clear that he has striven to create the best sound possible. You can hear every nook and cranny of the tune, from the thunderous basslines to the futuristic synthesizers to The Weeknd’s distinctive falsetto voice. The cover of “Wild Love” depicts a man in dark clothes as he walks through a foggy snowstorm, and that picture fits well with the mood of the music: dark, cold, and mysterious. This is not a normal EDM track by any means, and it gives Cashmere Cat a distinctive musical identity that would be perfect for a mainstream breakthrough.
