Matoma specializes in tropical house, also known as trop house. Tropical house is a subgenre of deep house that contains elements of dancehall and balearic house. Artists of tropical house often perform at various summer festivals such as Tomorrowland.

To paint a clearer picture of tropical house and what it sounds like, we can trace its evolution from the musical genres that inspire it. Deep house is a subgenre of house music that fuses 1980s jazz-funk with soul music. Dancehall is a genre of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Balearic house is a style of electronic dance music named for its popularity among European nightclub and beach rave participants on the Balearic island of Ibiza. All three of these genres combine to influence tropical house and shed a positive light on its style. This musical fusion demonstrates just how much overlap is present between dance genres.

Tropical house possesses typical house music characteristics, such as synthesizer instrumentation and a 4/4 kick drum pattern. Unlike deep house, tropical house has a more uplifting and relaxing sound. Additionally, tropical house songs have slower tempos than deep house songs.

“False Alarm” was released on June 24th. The song features Becky Hill, an English singer-songwriter from Bewdley, Worcestershire. She rose to prominence after appearing on the first series of The Voice UK. She joined Jessie J’s team and reached the semifinal of the competition. Since then, she has worked with several European artists on their music, such as Ella Eyre, Wilkinson, and Oliver Heldens.

If tropical house has captured your curiosity, a listening session with “False Alarm” will showcase everything positive about the genre. The song starts with a vividly psychedelic opener that smoothly transitions into Matoma’s powerful piano chords and Hill’s passionate vocals. The synthesizers follow soon afterward, and the chorus leaps into a truly impressive electronic mix of buoyant beats and sounds. It’s easy to tell why this genre is called tropical house! “False Alarm” is a bubbly and upbeat anthem of summertime happiness.
