The Shelters: Championing Modern Rock N’ Roll
The Shelters Have Successfully Transformed 70s Rock with Their Debut Album!
The Shelters are a rock band from Los Angeles, California. Consisting of Sebastian Harris, Josh Jove, Jacob Pillot, and Chase Simpson, the band is relatively unknown in the current music scene, even to the indie crowd. The Shelters came together in 2015 and have been playing shows in clubs ever since. It might have stayed that way if it wasn’t for American musician Tom Petty.
Tom Petty is best known as the lead singer of the heartland rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which has been around since 1976. He has recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which remain in circulation on adult contemporary and classic rock radio stations. Throughout his career, Petty has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
The story goes that Tom Petty happened to catch The Shelters during one of their shows and was so impressed with their talent that he gave them the keys to his home studio. From there, Jove and Simpson contributed to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ thirteenth studio album Hypnotic Eye, released in 2014. In return, Petty co-produced The Shelters’ debut EP as well as their first studio album, titled The Shelters. This summer, The Shelters will be opening for Tom Petty’s band Mudcrutch on their first national tour.
The amazing thing about The Shelters is that their debut album lives up to the backstory of their breakthrough. Lead single “Rebel Heart” opens the album with jangly guitars, a plucky piano, and a catchy melody that fits on both 1970s and modern radio. The next track “Birdwatching” continues the rocking momentum with equally rugged guitar riffs and a solid drumbeat. “Nothin’ in the World Can Stop Me Worryin’ ‘Bout That Girl” is a phenomenal cover of The Kinks’ original song with bluesy vocal and guitar tones.
There are many more awesome songs on The Shelters’ impressive debut album that will leave you headbanging to melodic, guitar-heavy rock-n’-roll. It’s easy to hear why Tom Petty got behind them and added them to his national tour. Their musical talent is undeniably the freshest sound modern rock has heard in a very long time.
