If you’re an avid YouTube user, Troye Sivan is probably a name that you recognize right away. Sivan is a South African-born Australian actor, YouTuber, and singer-songwriter. As an actor, he played the young James Howlett in the X-Men film X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). More recently, he’s starred as the titular character in the Spud Film trilogy. As a YouTuber, Sivan regularly makes online videos. As of April 2016, he has over 4 million subscribers and over 241 million video views.
However, today we’re here to talk about his musical career. In August 2014, Sivan released his first major label Extended Play (EP), TRXYE, which peaked at Number 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The lead single from TRXYE, “Happy Little Pill”, reached Number 10 on the Australian charts. In September 2015, Sivan released his second major label EP, Wild. His debut studio album, Blue Neighbourhood, was released later that December.
As revealed in an interview with YouTube channel PopCrush, Sivan’s favorite artists include Amy Winehouse, Taylor Swift, and Lorde. MTV Artists also cites Michael Jackson and Frank Ocean as additional influences on his music.
On June 23rd, Sivan released “WILD” featuring Alessia Cara, a Canadian singer-songwriter known for the sleeper hit “Here”. “WILD” was first released in September 2015 as the lead single from Sivan’s second EP Wild, so technically this tune is a remix. However, Cara’s inclusion in a new verse makes this remix of “WILD” worth covering.
The first version of “WILD” is a dreamy electropop tune featuring Sivan’s sultry vocals and cheery female background vocalists. The remix still contains these elements, but Cara fleshes out the song even more with her passionate vocals starting in her solo second verse. She and Sivan create some fantastic vocal harmonies that elevate this release of “WILD” above its initial release. (There’s also some added bass beats and mix modifications that alter “WILD” sonically, but the changes work really well with the addition of Cara.) Similar to Sivan, Cara has also been compared to Lorde, so the two have massive artistic potential as a synergetic vocal duo that can take the music world by storm.
