12-Year-Old Escapes Fight With Mom by Stealing Her Credit Card and Flying to Bali

After fights with their parents, some kids take satisfaction in running to their rooms and slamming the door. But one 12-year-old in Sydney, Australia just took the dramatic post-argument exit to a whole new level.

The boy, known by the pseudonym “Drew,” was angry when his mom told him he couldn’t go to the Indonesian island of Bali, where he and his family often went on vacation, 9news reports. So, he stole her credit card to book a flight himself. Two airlines told him he’d need a letter from his parents, but then he found one that would let kids fly alone with just a student ID and passport.

Drew reportedly tricked his grandma into giving him his passport, and when it came time to go to school, he caught a train to the airport instead. “I wanted to go on an adventure,” he said on 9news’s A Current Affair.

He made it through his layover in Perth without anyone questioning why he was by himself, he told 9news. “They just asked for my student ID and passport to prove that I’m over 12 and that I’m in secondary school.” Then, at customs in Denpasar, Bali, he was asked if he was traveling with anyone. “No, my mum is waiting outside because she lives in Bali and I’m going to meet her outside,” he said he replied before riding a bike to his hotel, where he told the staff that his sister was joining him.

Meanwhile, his mom Emma — who had the police flag his passport after his two failed attempts to book a flight — reported him missing. “There’s no emotion to feel what we felt when we found he left overseas,” she told 9news. “He just doesn’t like the word ‘no,’ and that’s what I got, a kid in Indonesia.”

“I was a bit worried,” Drew admitted. “But I still had adrenaline from being so angry at mom just to not care.” So, he spent four days exploring Bali on a motorbike. The Australian Federal Police eventually tracked him down after he posted a video of himself jumping into his hotel’s pool online.
