Going Against the Norm with Eric Zeller

If you had to take your eye out would you use a spoon or a knife? and Why?

Oh man, I think I would go with the spoon, because I could just pop it out right away. With a knife i would have to jab at it and a spoon would be just one thrust.

How did you get started with photography?

It started when I was 12 years old when I was skateboarding and one my buddies had a camcorder and we would film ourselves and try to make a cool videos, it was pretty cool to see all the things you could do with a camera. Once I graduated high school and was done skateboarding and realized I wasn’t going to go pro, I just began to take pictures with my phone of things that interested me. One of my friends told me to come to New York and take some pictures, he showed me a lot of cool spots and I was just like this is sick and knew it was time for me to get a good camera. From then on I just started taking pictures and I did not take any classes about photography until about 2 years ago in college. The class really helped me understand how to use the camera more.

One of your pictures on Instagram you are sitting on top of a crane, how was that like?

It was wild that was the first time I climbed a crane and I felt like an animal up there. It was breath taking and crazy to think that someone gets to sit up there and work all day and have this amazing view. I wanted to experience that and see what it looked liked.

Where does your inspiration come from to take these photos?

I guess adrenaline has a lot to do with it, I love the rush you get of doing the next level thing. A lot of what pushes me is trying to show people of places they can’t see, there are so many spots that we are wondering how it looks like, such as the inside of a train tunnel. Even seeing what the city looks like from the top of a building. I just like going against the norm.

Is this what you want to do with the rest of your life?

To be honest I think it is, I have reached the point in which I am really understanding of what I am doing. Right now I am interning at Bodega and training me to do look books for like fall fashion and that is opening more opportunities, I also do some other photoshoots for friends. What I really like doing is taking those pictures that give me that adrenaline rush and looking at those pictures the next day and I am just in disbelief.

What is your ultimate goal with photography?

My ultimate goal would be just to travel more. My father is from Germany and I have been there before when I was younger, but now that I am older I would like to go back and really explore the country. I think exploring Asia would be great as well.

What do you want people to get out of your pictures?

I guess inspiration, I hope my work inspires people to go out and do what they want. I think people get caught up with the likes and who follows you. Everyone should just post what they want and not worry what others think. Push yourself to what you want and forget what other think at the end of the day it’s you that matters.

If you knew tomorrow was you last day on this world, how would you live it?

I probably take a plane and fly with a copilot to a paradise island and just live my last day by the beach. Flying the plane would be the highlight of my day, it was just be a cool experience.
