Volkswagen I.D. R Break Pikes Peak World Record

Volkswagen I.D. R Break Pikes Peak World Record

Just last week, Volkswagen achieved its goal of beating Pikes Peak International Hill Climb’s previous record with a momentous run put forth by its all-electric I.D. R vehicle. Last set in 2013 by Sébastien Loeb’s 875-horsepower Peugeot, VW’s EV racer shredded the 12.42-mile course, racing up a distance of 4,720 feet in a shade over 7:57 minutes — besting the previous record by 15 seconds. And now, Volkswagen finally released the helicopter-shot video, which at times struggled to visually keep pace with the I.D. R’s breakneck speeds. Check out the video above and see just how the 671-horsepower electric Volkswagen prevailed at the iconic Pikes Peak race — hairpin turns and all. In case you missed it, check out Robert Downey Jr.’s custom 1970 Ford Mustang.
