7 Healthy Toast Toppings For A Better Breakfast

Toast is a go-to breakfast option in my house. It’s fast, easy to make, and you can eat it while you’re running out the door. There’s a lot to love, but basic bread with butter is more than a little boring. It’s also not that filling.

 If you want to add healthy variety into your weekday breakfasts, it’s time to get creative with your toast toppings.

Once you have your healthy, good-quality bread, you can put just about anything on top. You can load up your toast with protein, fiber, or essential vitamins. And don’t forget about flavor, people! These toast topping ideas are as delicious as they are healthy.

1. Almond Butter, Banana, and Cinnamon

This is the classic combination for toast toppings. Almond butter is full of good stuff like vitamin E, protein, and fiber. The bananas add a fruity taste, and cinnamon is a great way to add sweetness without sugar.

I usually slice up half a banana per piece of bread and use the butter to keep the slices on the toast. That way I can take bites as I’m getting ready in the morning without making too much of a mess.

2. Egg and Spinach

Adding a cooked egg to your toast will take longer to put together, but the result is delicious and filling. Lay a bed of fresh spinach on your favorite type of thick toast. (If it’s not thick, it won’t be able to support the weight of your egg.) Then you can choose how to cook your egg.

An over easy or sunny-side up egg looks pretty and has the added benefit of soaking your toast in yummy yolk, but it’s best eaten sitting down with an actual plate. I typically go with a scrambled egg.

3. Hummus and Cucumber

Hummus never lasts long in my house, but if you have some to spare, use it as a toast topping. This plant-based protein option comes in a variety of different flavors, so you can find one that suits your taste buds. The cucumber slices add a nice crisp crunch that’s a healthy start to your morning.

This toast combination will only take a few seconds to put together. You can slice your cucumber ahead of time and dip into your stash every morning. 

4. Yogurt and Strawberries

If you like Greek yogurt, you might be surprised by how well it goes with toast. But if you’re like me and have never been able to jump on the Greek yogurt bandwagon, regular yogurt works just as well. You could even substitute yogurt with goat cheese.

The strawberries are the best part of this toast topping recipe. They give you just the right amount of sweetness to perk up your morning. Just like the cucumbers from above, I slice up my fruit beforehand to make mornings easier.

5. Cottage Cheese and Blueberries

Cottage cheese is one of the most nutritious spreadable items you can put in your fridge. It’s rich in protein and calcium. It’s also great for digestion and heart health.

Blueberries and cottage cheese make a surprisingly tasty combination. They’re both super healthy and go great with toast. 

6. Avocado and Egg

Did you know that avocados contain more potassium than bananas? They also have “good” fats that are essential for healthy living. Basically, they’re a super food that will give your breakfast a powerful health boost.

Adding avocado and egg to your toast will definitely fill you up in the morning. You’ll make it all the way to lunch without those pesky hunger pangs. All you have to do is either slice or mash up a ripe avocado. Then put it on your toast and add your fried egg.

7. Honey, Strawberries, and Blueberries

This fruity toast topping combination always makes me think of summer. Even if it’s freezing outside, there’s something about honey and fruit that puts you in a good mood.

You don’t want to drown your toast in honey, but a light spread adds just a little bit of sweetness. Then top it off with strawberries, blueberries, or whatever fruit you think will taste best.
