Lifestyle last month Share Tweet Pin Share Home DIY How to turn your backyard into a kids’ playground They’ll while away hours with ease – by Better Homes & Gardens Gather your supplies:• Synthetic grass• Pour-in-place rubber surfacing • Sleeper for binocular post• Toy binoculars• Modular garden bedsYou’ll also need:Marking out paint; hired turf cutter (optional); shovel; wheelbarrow; synthetic grass joining tape; scissors; utility knife; steel trowel; quick-set concrete; playground mulch.Here’s how… STEP 1 Use marking out paint to mark out playground. If desired, use turf cutter (about $140 a day to hire) to loosen turf. Use shovel and wheelbarrow to remove. STEP 3 Use scissors to cut grass edges to form a wavy shape. Use utility knife to cut out stepping stones to entrance of shop. STEP 4 Mix pour-in-place rubber surfacing material following product instructions. Spread along edges of synthetic grass to cover concrete and onto soil. Use steel trowel to shape rubber and compact once you have desired shape. Allow to set. STEP 5 Mix a different colour of rubber surfacing and fill stepping stones cut in synthetic grass in Step 3. Allow to set. STEP 6 To create post for toy binoculars, dig hole 500mm deep and set sleeper with quick-set concrete so top is at a height to suit kids. Screw toy binoculars to post.ALSO: Make the kids a balancing beam! STEP 7 Assemble modular garden beds and place around playground. Fill with vegies or potted coloured plants. STEP 8 Install other play equipment, such as a slide, then fill with playground mulch.
