Starbucks Is Closed This Afternoon, So Try These Black-Owned Coffee Shops Instead

Beginning Tuesday (May 29) afternoon every company-owned Starbucks in the United States will close their doors for racial-bias education. The decision to close comes after two men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks in April. In response to the planned closure of stores and Starbucks corporate offices, social media has come together and compiled a list of alternative coffee shops.

The list was started by April Reign aka @ReignOfApril who is the senior director of marketing for the non-profit arts organization Fractured Atlas and the creator of the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. April asked for submissions from followers on Tuesday morning, tweeting: “Today is the day that @Starbucks closes its doors (in the afternoon 😒) for “racial sensitivity training.” There is a list/site of Black-owned coffee shops that I want to amplify. Anyone got that? #BoycottStarbucks #BuyBlack.” Users responded in kind, spotlighting coffee shops across the country.

Among those included in the list were multiple locations in Detroit, including the family owned Sweet Potato Sensations, Narrow Way Cafe, and Detroit Sips. Also spotlighted was the Washington, D.C.-based Calabash Tea Bar & Cafe; Berkins Blend in Glastonbury, Connecticut; More Than Java in Laurel, Maryland; and Brewers Cafe in Richmond, Virginia.

In addition to the social media suggestions, users also pointed to previously compiled lists of Black-owned coffee shops, including this one that highlights shops in Brooklyn, New York and this list that selected shops from across the country.

Below is a list highlighting some of the coffee shops mentioned in the Twitter thread — who knows, maybe you’ll find a local place that’ll make you give up Starbucks for good.
