This College Threatened to Make Shrek Its Mascot for Retweets

Hey now, the University of Toledo wants its mascot be to an all star. In a since-deleted tweet from Tuesday, the official Twitter account for the Ohio college called for 500,000 retweets to change the mascot from Rocky the Rocket to Shrek, per USA Today.

Unfortunately, though, it seems the school was just joking about welcoming the the lovable green ogre to its hallowed halls. A representative from the school clarified to USA Today that Rocky isn’t going anywhere. “We are definitely not changing the school mascot to Shrek,” University of Toledo media relations specialist Christine Billau said. “If we do reach a half million (retweets), we’d plan something special for Rocky.”

Before the tweet was deleted, however, the idea of turning the campus into a swamp really took off. Though it’s not possible to tell how many retweets the original tweet received, there are plenty of hilarious replies and suggestions like a new fight song to renaming the stadiums. “Will you rename all the stadiums “the swamp” so the crowd can chant “get out of our swamp”/”get out of my swamp” at the opposing team?” one Twitter user wrote. “Then your fight song has to be ‘All Star’ by Smash Mouth,” another suggested.

The choice of Shrek was surely not an accident. Besides Shrek being one of the most beloved movies of all time, the ogre was first introduced to audiences on April 22, 2001, almost seven years ago to the day, so perhaps the University of Toledo was celebrating this momentous occasion. Not to mention Donkey, Fiona, and the whole crew are set to hit Netflix in May 2018. It’s truly a great time to be a Shrek fan.
