Frenchman to Float Across Atlantic in a Barrel

A 71-year-old retired military parachutist will travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean on a self-crafted barrel. Jean-Jacques Savin has already left the Canary Islands, traveling at a consistent pace of “two or three kilometers an hour,” as the capsule only moves with the help of the ocean’s currents.

He is currently 19 miles off the island of El Hierro, where his trip began. The Frenchmen is sponsored and crowdfunded, keeping everyone posted on his travels via his Facebook page. The capsule contains some storage space, as well as a bed and a small kitchen. It also has a porthole built in for Savin to see the fish pass by below.

Savin already prepared to usher in the New Years with a couple bottles of wine stowed away for the occasion. He hopes to end up in Barbados. He told AFP “although I’d really like it to be a French island like Martinique or Guadeloupe. That would be easier for the paperwork and for bringing the barrel back.”

In other news, the Titanic 2 is setting a course for the Atlantic in 2020.
