Mortal Kombat 3 Behind the Scenes Ed Boon

Mortal Kombat 3 Behind the Scenes Ed Boon

Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat game series, recently took to his Twitter account to share some throwback footage in the making of MK3. When launched, the Mortal Kombat game franchise gained widespread notoriety with the incorporation of ending combat moves called “Fatalities” — these were finishing sequences that depicted extreme gore and violence, and were different with each character.

What was unique about the earlier Mortal Kombat games was the incorporation of real actors, and their motion-captured portrayals onto digital backgrounds. Through the behind the scenes footages, we can clearly see the amount of detail the cast went through in acting out the basic punch, down to the their actions when taking a hit. After watching the video above and comparing it to in-game footage, it’s hard to unsee these digitized sprites as simply human actors wearing make-up and elaborate costumes.
