Willem Dafoe as Van Gogh in 'At Eternitys Gate'

Willem Dafoe’s latest starring role is as none other than legendary Dutch master Vincent van Gogh. In At Eternity’s Gate, named after a van Gogh painting showcasing an elderly man with his head in his hands, Dafoe explores van Gogh’s later years, wherein the artist lived out his final days in and around an asylum. Tracing the evolution of van Gogh’s techniques late in his career, At Eternity’s Gate touches on key life events, like van Gogh cutting off his own ear and tapping into his personal spirituality as inspiration for his art. Evoking the sunflowers and night skies so crucial to van Gogh’s later work, the film splashes blue and yellow filters across the imagery, creating an attitude of wistful dreaminess.

Check out the trailer above and stay tuned for the premiere on November 16.

The Vincent van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam recently teamed up with Vans for a collaborative capsule collection and sneakers.
