Blizzard Leisure has declared the franchise entrepreneurs for the first 7 teams in the Overwatch League, and the checklist involves a pair of acquainted names. New England Patriots proprietor Robert Kraft will have the Boston Overwatch group, and New York Mets COO Jeff Wilpon will provide as franchise proprietor for the New York Town Overwatch group.
Three of the 7 golf equipment are endemic Overwatch teams: the Immortals (Los Angeles), Misfits Gaming (Miami-Orlando), and NRG Esports (San Francisco). The remaining two Overwatch teams have entrepreneurs dependent in Asia. Tech firm NetEase will have the Shanghai group. Kevin Chou, co-founder of the cell recreation developer Kabam, will have the Seoul group.
This news follows on the heels of rumors that the Overwatch League involves teams to put down a $20 million franchise payment. Many significant hitters in esports have let go of their Overwatch teams because the announcement of the Overwatch League, including compLexity, Team SoloMid, Red Reserve, Denial Esports and Splyce back in May. Dignitas, Rise Nation, and Ninjas in Pyjamas launched their Overwatch teams in June.
According to a press launch from Activision Blizzard, the first year of Overwatch League will kick off “later this year,” and “regular-year matches will be played at an esports arena in the Los Angeles area” on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. In addition to these typical year matches, franchised teams “will have a license to run and monetize up to 5 novice situations in their house territory just about every year.”
Expect to see Overwatch League paraphernalia readily available for sale in-recreation. According to the press launch, “the sale of league-affiliated enthusiast items in Overwatch” will present a resource of profits to the league, in addition to “advertising, ticketing and broadcast rights revenues.”
