Nintendo Switch Online Offers Cloud Storage for Save Data Backup, Details Here

Nintendo detailed their planned online subscription service in full today. While a lot of these details were previously known, including pricing, release date, and the use of an app, Nintendo also announced that subscription to its online services will offer cloud backup for your save data.

Players finally can rest easy knowing that Nintendo will have backups of your save data in case anything happens to your Nintendo Switch or SD card. The cloud storage will be available in September, the same time as the launch of Nintendo’s online subscription service. It’s unknown exactly how much cloud storage Nintendo will give players.

In addition, Nintendo Switch Online will include a library of classic NES games players can download and play anywhere as long as they are members of the service. While Nintendo mentions 20 games, they’ve only revealed 10 so far. These titles include:

  • Soccer
  • Mario Bros
  • Ice Climber
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Tennis
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Dr. Mario
  • Donkey Kong
  • Balloon Fight
  • The Legend of Zelda

The rest of the lineup will be revealed at a later date. Nintendo also mentions “Special Offers” for members though it’s unclear exactly what that is. Presumably it will be discounts or special sales exclusive to members on Nintendo products and services.

As previously revealed, subscription to Nintendo Switch Online will be priced at $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months, and $19.99 for a year. There is also a Family Membership which offers multiple memberships for $34.99 a year.

To use Nintendo Switch Online, players will be required to download a separate mobile app from either the App Store or Google Play Store. This is in place of a native online app within the Switch. After September all online games will require subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, while certain games like Splatoon 2 will have unique online experiences within the app.
